Levonorgestrel 0 75mg /day: 7 days after onset of first symptoms: no risk observed. BACKGROUND:
Cardiovascular disease has been a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many industrialized countries; therefore, prevention of this chronic disease is needed to improve public health. Some hormonal contraceptives, including birth control pills, may have a beneficial effect in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, the effect of hormonal contraceptives on cardiac events in general or on specific coronary heart diseases in particular is insufficiently defined large population-based trials.
OBJECTIVES:
To systematically review the association of oral hormonal contraceptives (OCs) on the risk of major cardiovascular events in women with and without known coronary heart diseases, based on systematic reviews and cohort studies. We aimed to pool and critically appraise the recent results to establish extent of the effect OC on cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality.
SEARCH METHODS:
We searched the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) study databases for all cohort studies that reported and estimated the incidence mortality risk of major CVD events separately (from the original EPIC, EPIC-Oxford, EPIC-Norfolk, WOSCOPS, EPIC-Oxford with additional case ascertainment, and the CHART trial), including trial, for randomized controlled trials or randomised with missing data on covariables of primary interest. When needed, other relevant articles were identified through a hand search and manual searches within the relevant reference lists of randomised controlled trials and papers in the reference lists of relevant reviews. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE:
We included 10 studies including 2,843 cases and 1,734 controls.
