System Evaluation

For clients with existing flood warning systems, Distinctive AFWS Designs, Inc. (DDi) will first determine the overall health of your current system. There are many considerations to determine said health. Proper consideration of all those factors in a system evaluation is vital to building confidences that it will perform under the most intense adverse conditions.

For clients without flood warning systems, DDi will still begin with a needs analysis and risk assessment. Those that come to us with nothing have often just experienced a significant event and are seeking ways to reduce loss of life and/or property damage from future events. DDi’s assessments are vital to the next stage of system design.

System Design

System design starts and ends with quality data. In fact, our company’s motto is “No data is better than bad data,” because bad data can’t provide the lifesaving and damage-reducing warnings needed for your community.  In fact, bad data provides a false sense of security and presents huge liability concerns for the system owner/operator.

At DDi, we believe the key aspect of a successful automated flood warning system (AFWS) is the integration of multiple components designed to work together like a strong chain of links. This “chain” must include more than your standard water level gauging stations and alarms. It should also include reliable data, stakeholder and public participation, quality response plans, and ongoing quality oversight and maintenance of all these components—all of which are services DDi offers above and beyond the basic hardware install.

Based on our experience, flood warning systems lacking proper design are doomed to fail before the first piece of equipment is even acquired. Just because one design worked for one jurisdiction does not assure that it will work for you. Similarly, one piece of equipment may work very well at one installation but perform poorly at another. The success of the system begins with a well thought out system design.

System Installation

Having experienced, detail-oriented installation teams will result in cost-effective, reliable, maintenance-friendly systems that allow optimal performance when your system is under stress and needed the most. DDi’s installation teams will take care of the “little things” during a system install that can have huge impacts later during operation and maintenance of your flood warning system.

Stakeholder and Public Engagement

After the installation of your new or upgraded flood warning system, we make it our priority at DDi to involve several groups of people into the engagement of the alert data provided by your new system. Those groups are system operators, system stakeholders, and the general public.

System Operators

At DDi, we believe that those responsible for the day-to-day operations of your system must have a feeling of ownership of the system. We are eager to provide the training to your system operators that will provide this feeling of ownership and commitment to quality. In fact, each system design can and should include the development of a flood response and emergency action plan written specifically for your community’s unique needs.

Stakeholders

DDi also understands that those providing the financial resources must see that the system is providing a highly needed service to the area. They must understand that their investment is cost-effective and valued by the community. Therefore, we will often format alert data specifically for this group.

General Public

Our number one value at DDi is system reliability, and that reliability is not limited to system operators and government employees. We believe that, ultimately, the general public should be given access to reliable information from your flood warning system. In the end it is their system—one that they have paid for and rely on for potentially lifesaving information.

System Maintenance

DDi knows that no chain is stronger than its weakest link; and quality ongoing maintenance is regrettably the most often neglected “link.” An overwhelming number of pending failures can be detected and/or prevented with the implementation of a well-developed system maintenance plan. This is why most ongoing client relationships result in semi-annual maintenance visits to each gauging location, repeater site, as well as a review of all spare parts. When an emergency occurs, you may rest assured that your flood warning system is both reliable and field-ready.

Service Locations

DDi has been serving public and private U.S. entities with reliable automated flood warning systems for 30 years. In over 20 states DDi has installed and/or maintained over 2000 gauging stations, established over 300 computer base stations, and pioneered hundreds of emergency plans and procedures for public and private entities across the nation.

Though we have teams in North Carolina and Texas, DDi service areas are not limited to any specific geographic location. We have the expertise to design a flood warning system to meet your needs, regardless of where you are. Hover on a state below to see our work in a location near you.

As shown in the map above, our client base currently includes local, state, federal, and tribal agencies in addition to private and public utilities and organizations across the U.S. DDi serves each of these clients with a complete review of existing flood warning systems, expanding and upgrading said systems, or completely designing new systems from scratch to provide lifesaving and damage-reducing flood warning alerts.

DDi enjoys many long-term relationships with our clients—some for over 22 years—as they continue to enhance and operate their flood warning systems. For these clients, we provide scheduled routine and emergency maintenance services. Periodic performance evaluations and independent reviews are imperative to ensure that the latest technologies and capabilities are being employed to protect life and property.
